Remote Learning: K-12 Music

A number of music organizations are showcasing a variety of music styles for K-12 students to experience and appreciate:

  • Berliner Philharmoniker – There are over 600 orchestral concerts in the Digital Concert Hall (must register by March 30 to access). Bonus videos from behind the scenes: documentaries on the history of the orchestra, portraits of conductors and orchestra members.

  • Chrome Music Lab – play with music through a variety of experiments.

  • Daily Motion – Watch Broadway Musicals online for FREE.

  • Dallas Symphony Orchestra Kids – site gives students a great introduction to music history, the opportunity to hear and learn about the instruments of the orchestra, and tips on how to practice.

  • Coronavirus Info – How Coronavirus Hijacks Your Cells. Students might start with the classic K/W/L chart: What do you know, or think you know, about this pandemic and its impact? What else do you want to know? Make a list of as many questions as you can on as many aspects of this outbreak and its effects and implications as you can think of, then choose one to investigate. What is known? What is still unknown?

  • Edpuzzle – introduce students to self-paced learning with interactive video lessons. It’s easy to add your own voice narration and questions! Find or create a video and then add in questions. Whether or not you have an account, check out the information on how to get started

  • Offline Activities – track how many sit-ups/jumping jacks you can do each day, track how long you can hold a plank, create a new dance move, count the steps to move between locations in your home, put items in bags to lift and see if you can add more items after a few days, invent a new sport, do some exercise move or march in place during commercial breaks or on the hour, play trashketball (wadded paper and use trash can for basket) and see how far you can move from the basket, go for a walk outside.

  • Videoconference Events (archived)- Students can learn from experts around the world. Share an archived REPLAY link of the specific event to students (from the Telepresence Project GSheet) while adding specific questions or an activity (like using the “I Notice, I Wonder” Brainstorm on a GDoc or to respond within Flipgrid) to accompany the VC.

  • Videconference Events (live) – Students can join various live VC events that are streaming on YouTube by certain organizations. Exploring By The Seat is one such organization that has a variety of upcoming events that are listed on the site (no registration needed).   • Virtual Labs

  • Wonderopolis – a place where natural curiosity and imagination lead to exploration and discovery. Every day, a new question is posed and explored. There are 2500+ Wonders of the Day and a mini quiz. Free. Teachers should Explore Wonders and do a Search. Links to the activity/lesson/exploration are easily shared with a class site/GClassroom.

  • YouTube Channels – Amoeba Sisters, Asap Science, Crash Course, Physics Girl, Sci Show, TED-Ed, We The Curious, Learn@Home or create your own as you have your own YouTube Channel in the GSuite for Edu platform.

Pearson has released access to its eText series… over 70 digital learning resources. Access to the digital learning resources at www.pearsoncanada.ca/athome.

Which resources can you access? … Through Kivuto’s Texidium platform and eReader, families can access digital versions of over 70 curriculum-based elementary and secondary textbooks. These resources cover curriculum areas, including literacy, math, science, French as a second language, and social studies.

How long will the resources be available? … We’ll provide open access to these resources until May 25, 2020. With this support, your family now has access to the same high quality, trusted resources that are used in classrooms across Canada every day to support student learning.

  • Google Jamboard chrome app – online collaborative whiteboard, can draw while sharing screen for students to see or use screencastify while you talk through a problem. Can even invite students to join and create extra pages. Tutorial video.
  • Google Keep for Math – great EDU in 90 video and go to the       to add drawing for different backgrounds (grid, dot, lined). Can save into Google Doc or share with others.
  • Google Chrome Canvas – individual basic whiteboard, easily shared during GMeet sessions, can also bring in images to annotate over.
  • PearDeck Google Slides add-on – pull PearDeck whiteboard slide into Google Slide deck via the “Add-ons” and have students respond to a particular question, student individual whiteboard, teacher sees all of them. Math Templates.
  • Texthelp’s Equatio – chrome extension that allows you to type, write or speak math expressions. Also check out Equatio Mathspace.
